Isma'il b. Jabir related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: In every age just men keep from this religion the interpretation of the people of falsehood, the distortion of the extremists and the deviation of the ignorant, as the blacksmith's bellows clear the rust from iron in a blazing forge.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Abu Hamza al-Thumali says: I asked Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, about the meaning of the verse "And who is more astray than one who follows his own desire without guidance from God?" He said: What God means in this verse is those who have taken their own opinion as their religion without the leadership of the infallible Imams, peace be upon them.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Shimr b. Jabir related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever serves God in religion without having heard it from a truthful one, God will leave him wandering in his religion until the Day of Resurrection.

Elucidation: "Al-tih" means bewilderment and wandering in religion.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Sayyari related from 'Ali b. 'Abd Allah that someone asked Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, about the meaning of the verse "So whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor be wretched." He said: It is whoever holds to the infallible Imams, peace be upon them, and follows their commands and does not overstep obedience to them.

Kitab Zayd al-Zarrad: Jabir al-Ju'fi says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, saying: We have vessels filled with knowledge and wisdom, but there are none worthy of it. The filling of these vessels with knowledge is so that it may be passed on to our Shi'a. So look at the contents of the vessels and take them; purify them of murkiness and turbidity, and take the vessels that are bright, clean and clear. Beware of the bad vessels, for by them you turn away, grow distant and go astray.

From the same: Jabir al-Ju'fi says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: Seek knowledge from the mine of knowledge. Beware of what those who bar the way of God have inserted into it. Then he said: Knowledge has gone, and its dust has remained in the bad vessels; beware of the inward of these unclean vessels, for in it is destruction; take their outward, for in it is deliverance.

Elucidation: Perhaps what is meant is the purifying of knowledge from people's corrupt opinions and beliefs, or the cleansing of knowledge from their reports which accord with their own doctrines; and what is meant by their inward is their corrupt beliefs, or the transgression they keep hidden from people.
