إِنَّ الْحَسَنَ الْبَصْرِيَّ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ الْعِلْمَ يُؤْذِي رِيحُ بُطُونِهِمْ أَهْلَ النَّارِ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عليه السلام فَهَلَكَ إِذاً مُؤْمِنُ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ وَ مَا زَالَ الْعِلْمُ مَكْتُوماً مُنْذُ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ نُوحاً عليه السلام فَلْيَذْهَبِ الْحَسَنُ يَمِيناً وَ شِمَالًا فَوَ اللَّهِ مَا يُوجَدُ الْعِلْمُ إِلَّا هَاهُنَا١.

Al-Hasan al-Basri holds that those who conceal knowledge — the foul smell of their bellies torments the people of Hell. And he said: In that case the believer of Pharaoh's house is destroyed! Ever since God raised Noah to prophethood, knowledge has always remained concealed. Let al-Hasan al-Basri go right or left (let him go wherever he will); by God, he will never find knowledge save with us, the People of the House.

«17»- ير، بصائر الدرجات الْفَضْلُ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ عليه السلام يَقُولُ وَ سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ فَقَالَ إِنَّ عُثْمَانَ الْأَعْمَى يَرْوِي عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْتُمُونَ الْعِلْمَ تُؤْذِي رِيحُ بُطُونِهِمْ أَهْلَ النَّارِ قَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عليه السلام فَهَلَكَ إِذاً مُؤْمِنُ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ كَذَبُوا إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنْ فُرُوجِ الزُّنَاةِ وَ مَا زَالَ الْعِلْمُ مَكْتُوماً قَبْلَ قَتْلِ ابْنِ آدَمَ فَلْيَذْهَبِ الْحَسَنُ يَمِيناً وَ شِمَالًا لَا يُوجَدُ الْعِلْمُ إِلَّا عِنْدَ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ جَبْرَئِيلُ.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Sulayman b. Khalid says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him — while a man of the people of Basra was with him questioning him and saying: 'Uthman al-A'ma relates from al-Hasan al-Basri: those who conceal knowledge — the foul smell of their bellies torments the people of Hell — and he said: In that case the believer of Pharaoh's house is destroyed! They have lied. That foul smell is from the private parts of fornicators; and knowledge has remained concealed ever since the son of Adam was slain.

بيان: قوله عليه السلام إن ذلك أي الريح التي تؤذي أهل النار إنما هي من فروج الزناة.

Let al-Hasan al-Basri go right or left — he will not find knowledge save with a household upon whom Gabriel descended.

أقول: قد أوردنا بعض الأخبار في باب كتمان العلم.

The foul smell that torments the people of Hell is the stench of the private parts of adulterous women. I say: Some of these reports I have given in the chapter on concealing knowledge.

«18»- ير، بصائر الدرجات أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْأَهْوَازِيِّ عَنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ يَحْيَى الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عليه السلام قَالَ: قَالَ لِي إِنَّ الْحَكَمَ بْنَ عُتَيْبَةَ مِمَّنْ قَالَ اللَّهُ وَ مِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَ بِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَ ما هُمْ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ فَلْيُشَرِّقِ الْحَكَمُ وَ لْيُغَرِّبْ أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ لَا يُصِيبُ الْعِلْمَ إِلَّا مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ جَبْرَئِيلُ.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Abu Basir related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Truly al-Hakam b. 'Utayba is among those concerning whom God sent down this verse: "And among the people are some who say: We believe in God and in the Last Day, yet they are not believers." So let him go to the east of the world or to its west; by God, he will not find knowledge save from a household upon whom Gabriel descended.

«19»- ير، بصائر الدرجات السِّنْدِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ عليه السلام عَنْ شَهَادَةِ وَلَدِ الزِّنَا تَجُوزُ قَالَ لَا فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ الْحَكَمَ بْنَ عُتَيْبَةَ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهَا تَجُوزُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَغْفِرْ لَهُ ذَنْبَهُ مَا قَالَ اللَّهُ لِلْحَكَمِ إِنَّهُ لَذِكْرٌ لَكَ وَ لِقَوْمِكَ وَ سَوْفَ تُسْئَلُونَ فَلْيَذْهَبِ الْحَكَمُ يَمِيناً وَ شِمَالًا فَوَ اللَّهِ لَا يُوجَدُ الْعِلْمُ إِلَّا مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ جَبْرَئِيلُ.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Abu Basir says: I asked Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, about the testimony of one born of fornication. He said: It is not admissible. I said: Al-Hakam b. 'Utayba holds that it is admissible. He said: O God, do not forgive his sin! Did God not say concerning this ruling: "And indeed it [the Qur'an] is a reminder for you and for your people, and you will be questioned"? Let al-Hakam go to the right of the world or to its left; by God, he will not find knowledge save in a household upon whom Gabriel descended.
