Al-Ihtijaj: Ishaq b. Ya'qub says: I asked Muhammad b. 'Uthman al-'Amri, may God have mercy on him (one of the four deputies), to deliver for me a letter in which I had asked about difficult questions. Then a rescript came forth in the blessed hand of our master the Lord of the Age (may God hasten his relief): As for the new questions and the events that newly arise, in them refer to the narrators of our hadiths, for they are my proof upon you and I am the proof of God… to the end of the hadith.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Rib'i says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: God refuses to make matters run save through their causes; and for every cause He has appointed an exposition, and for every exposition He has appointed a knowledge, and for every knowledge He has appointed a speaking gate. He who has knowledge knows it, and he who is ignorant does not know it; and that speaking gate is the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and ourselves.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Al-Yaqtini related with an elevated chain from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: God refuses to make matters run save through their causes; and for everything He has appointed a cause, and for every cause He has appointed an exposition, and for every exposition He has appointed a key, and for every key He has appointed a knowledge, and for every knowledge He has appointed a speaking gate. Whoever knows him has known God, and whoever denies him has denied God. And that speaking gate is the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and ourselves.
Elucidation: Perhaps what is meant by "the thing that has a cause" is nearness, success, honour and Paradise; and its cause is obedience and whatever brings those things about. "The exposition of that cause" is the holy law; "its key" is revelation; and "the gate" through which one reaches this knowledge is the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and the infallible Imams, peace be upon them.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Sulayman says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him — while there sat with him a man of the people of Basra named 'Uthman al-A'ma, who was saying:
