in the Hereafter too the light will be taken from before his two eyes and turned into darkness that will lead him to the Fire. O Mu'alla! Dissimulation is my religion and the religion of my forefathers; whoever does not practise dissimulation has no religion. O Mu'alla! God loves to be worshipped in secret as He is worshipped openly. O Mu'alla! Whoever divulges our cause is like one who denies it.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Al-Mufaddal says: I went in to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him — on the day Mu'alla b. Khunays had been hung upon the gibbet — and I said: O son of the Messenger of God, do you not see what a grave calamity has befallen the Shi'a, that Mu'alla has been hung upon the gibbet? He said: May God have mercy on him; I expected such a calamity, for he divulged our secret. Divulging our secret costs no less than making war upon us. Whoever entrusts our secret to those unworthy of it will not leave this world save by being slain with a weapon, or by affliction, ruin, and the severing of limbs.

Al-Mahasin: Al-Mufaddal and Fudayl say: We were a group with Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, at his house, and he spoke with us about certain matters. When we wished to return, he stood at the door of his house, and before entering he turned to us and said: May God have mercy on you — do not speak of our cause and our secret (the walaya) save with those worthy of it; for its cost is heavier than enmity against us. Go, may God have mercy on you, and do not divulge our secret.

Al-Mahasin: Ishaq b. 'Ammar says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, recited this verse: "That was because they used to disbelieve in the signs of God and kill the prophets without right; that was because they rebelled and used to transgress,"

"That was because they used to disbelieve in the signs of God and kill the prophets without right; this was because they rebelled and used to transgress" — and he said: By God, they did not strike the prophets with their own hands nor kill them with their own swords; rather they heard their hadiths and divulged them, and as a result of their divulging, the prophets were seized and killed. This deed brought about killing, transgression and sin. Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: the like of the hadith above is related from Ishaq.

Al-Mahasin: Yunus b. Ya'qub relates from certain persons that Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever divulges our secret has killed us deliberately, not by mistake.
