The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: O brother of Thaqif, the man of the Ansar asked his question before you, so sit, that I may first answer him.

Chapter 13: The prohibition of concealing knowledge and of betraying it, and the permissibility of concealing it from those unworthy of it

The verses:

al-Baqara: "And do not mix truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth while you know it." "Those who conceal the clear signs and the guidance We have sent down, after We have made them plain for people in the Book — God curses them, and the cursers curse them." "Those to whom We have given the Book know him as they know their own sons; and indeed a party of them conceal the truth while they know it." "Those who conceal what God has sent down of the Book and sell it for a paltry price — they swallow nothing into their bellies but fire. God will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them, and theirs is a painful punishment."

Al 'Imran: "O People of the Book, why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know it?" "And [recall] when God took a covenant from those who were given the Book: You shall surely make it clear to people and shall not conceal it. Then they cast it behind their backs and bought for it a paltry price — and evil is what they bought."

Majalis of al-Mufid: Ibn Taghlib related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: A grieving sigh over the wrong done to us has the reward of glorification of God; to be sorrowful on our account is an act of worship; and to keep our secrets hidden is a striving in the way of God. Then Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: This hadith ought to be written in gold.

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him: Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, said concerning the verse "a guidance for the God-fearing": The Qur'an is an illumination and a healing for the God-fearing among the Shi'a of Muhammad and 'Ali, peace be upon them both — those who kept clear of every kind of unbelief, then left the grave sins and guarded against them and abandoned them, and kept away from disclosing the secrets of God, exalted, and the secrets of the pure among God's servants, the successors of Muhammad — may God bless him and his family — and kept their secrets hidden; and who guarded against veiling knowledge from those worthy of it, and spread it among them.
