"O God, I take refuge in You lest I go astray or be led astray, lest I slip or be made to slip, lest I wrong or be wronged, lest I act ignorantly or be treated with ignorance. Mighty is Your protection, hallowed are Your names, exalted is Your praise, and there is no god but You." Then he would say: "In the name of God. God suffices me. In God I place my trust. There is no power and no strength save in God, the High, the Mighty. O God, make my heart firm and set the truth flowing upon my tongue."
Al-Shahid al-Thani relates of certain scholars that they used to recite this supplication before the lesson: "O God, I take refuge in You lest I go astray or be led astray, or slip or be made to slip, or wrong or be wronged, or act ignorantly or be treated with ignorance. O God, profit me by what You have taught me, teach me what profits me, and increase me in knowledge; and praise be to God in every state. O God, I take refuge in You from knowledge that does not profit, from a heart that is not humble, from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a supplication that is not heard."
It is related that one who gathers with a company and wishes to pray should recite this supplication: "O God, apportion to us such fear of You as will stand between us and disobedience to You; and such obedience to You as will bring us to Your Garden; and such certainty as will make the afflictions of this world light upon us. O God, let us enjoy our hearing, our sight and our strength so long as You keep us alive, and make them our heirs; and let our retribution fall upon those who wronged us; and help us against those who show us enmity; and do not place our affliction in our religion; and do not make this world our greatest care nor the limit of our knowledge; and do not give power over us to one who will not show us mercy."
It is related from the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — that God loves a lowered voice and hates a raised voice.
It is related of the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — that when he had finished his discourse and wished to rise from his assembly he would recite this supplication: "O God, forgive us what we have done in error and what we have done deliberately, what we have concealed and what we have declared, and what You know better than we. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts back; there is no god but You." And on rising from his assembly he would recite this supplication: "Glory be to You, O God, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they describe; and peace be upon the messengers; and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds." A number have reckoned this supplication among the Prophet's practices.
In some reports it is said that these three verses are the expiation for the assembly: "Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they describe. And peace be upon the messengers. And praise be to God, Lord of the worlds."
It is related that a man of the Ansar came to the Prophet to ask him something, and a man of Thaqif came too, and he said:
