Basra named 'Uthman al-A'ma said to him: Al-Hasan al-Basri holds that those who conceal knowledge — the stench of their bellies torments the people of Hell. He said: Then the believer of Pharaoh's house is destroyed! — whereas the Qur'an praises him for concealing knowledge. Since the mission of Noah, peace be upon him, knowledge has been hidden and concealed. So let al-Hasan al-Basri go whichever way he will; by God, knowledge is found nowhere but in this House. And that Imam used to say constantly: The trial and testing of people weighs heavily upon us: if we call them they do not answer, and if we leave them they are guided by none but us.

Amali of al-Saduq: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: O Mudrik! May God have mercy on a servant who draws people's love towards us: let him relate to them what they can grasp and leave aside what they would reject.

Rijal al-Kashshi: 'Isa b. 'Ubayd related from his brother Ja'far, who said: I was sitting with Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him,
27.He is al-Hasan b. Yasar, Abu Sa'id b. Abi al-Hasan al-Basri al-Ansari. It is related of Ibn Hajar that he said of him in al-Taqrib: trustworthy, excellent and well known; but he related much without chains and practised tadlis, and would relate from a company he had not heard from, saying "they related to us". His pupil Ibn Abi al-'Awja' the materialist said of him — when he was asked why he had left his master's doctrine and entered upon something with neither basis nor reality: My master was a confuser; at one time he spoke of free decree and at another of compulsion, and I do not know that he held any doctrine and kept to it. Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: among those said to have hated 'Ali, peace be upon him, and blamed him is al-Hasan al-Basri; Hammad b. Salama related from him that he said: Had 'Ali eaten poor dates in Medina it would have been better for him than what he entered into. And it is related of him that he was among those who discouraged people from supporting him. I say: al-Kashshi relates on p. 64 of his Rijal from 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Qutayba, who said: Abu Muhammad al-Fadl b. Shadhan was asked about the eight ascetics and said: al-Rabi' b. Khuthaym, Harim b. Hayyan, Uways al-Qarani and 'Amir b. 'Abd Qays, who were with 'Ali, peace be upon him, and of his companions, ascetics and God-fearing; as for Abu Muslim, he was a wicked hypocrite and a companion of Mu'awiya, and it was he who urged people to fight 'Ali, peace be upon him… and al-Hasan would meet every party with what pleased them, and adorned himself for leadership, and was the chief of the Qadarites. Reports censuring him are numerous and will come, God willing, in their place. He died in Rajab of the year 110 at the age of eighty-nine. This hadith comes with another chain under number 27.
