People are of four kinds: an ignorant man who perishes, a slave of his own desire; a worshipper who seeks strength, growing more arrogant the more he worships; a scholar who wishes people to follow after him and delights in their praise; and a man of understanding who walks the path of truth and loves to rise for the truth, but is powerless or defeated — this man is the best of the people of your age, and his intellect outweighs them all.

"Al-taraddi" is perishing and falling into pits from which escape is hard, like one who falls into a well. "Mutaqawwi" is one who has great strength for worship; or whose aim in worship is strength, mastery and honour; or it is from the root "qawiya" meaning the pang of hunger. "Fa-huwa 'ajiz" means in his body, or that he is overcome and in fear of the rulers. "Fa-hadha amthal" means this man is the most excellent of the people of your age.

Al-Khisal: 'Imran al-Halabi said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: Seven ruin their own work: a forbearing man — a scholar who has much knowledge and does not spread it, so that people do not know him, nor profit from him, nor is his name mentioned; a wise man who gathers wisdom and gives his capital to those unworthy of it, who are liars and do not believe; one who takes a deceitful and treacherous man as his trusted friend; a great man who is not kind; a mother who does not keep her child's secret and discloses what he confides; one who hastens to rebuke his brothers; and one who is forever quarrelling with his own kind and fellow-believer.

"La yu'rafu bi-dhalika" — that he should spread his knowledge so as to be known by it. "Munkirun li-ma yu'ta ilayhi, sifatun li'l-kadhib": whatever is given him he denies and does not acknowledge; or he does not recognise the kindness done him. "Ya'manu dha al-makr": he does not keep clear of his guile and treachery. "Wa'lladhi yujadilu akhahu": disputing about lineage or about religion

With fatha on the undotted ha' and doubling of the lam: a seller of shiraj, that is, sesame oil. Al-Najashi lists him on p. 72 of his Rijal and says: Ahmad b. 'Umar al-Hallal used to sell "hall", that is shiraj; he related from al-Rida, peace be upon him, and has questions addressed to him. Al-'Allama says in the first part of al-Khulasa: Ahmad b. 'Ali al-Hallal — with undotted ha' and doubled lam — who used to sell "hall", that is shiraj, is trustworthy; so said al-Shaykh al-Tusi, may God have mercy on him, adding that he related the Asl; and on account of this statement of his I have some hesitation in accepting his narration. He was of Kufa, an anmati, and among the companions of al-Rida, peace be upon him.
