with one's brothers in faith, which destroys a man's labour and striving. Thus a scholar who does not spread his knowledge has ruined it; a man of wealth ruins his wealth by abandoning prudence and caution; and likewise by feeling safe from men of guile he ruins his wealth, his life, his honour and his religion. "Al-sayyid al-fazz" — harshness is the ruin of lordship and of fortune, or of kindness to people. And a mother, by disclosing her child's secret, loses her tenderness and her labour for her child and for others.

Al-Khisal: Imam 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Ten bring hardship upon themselves and upon others and cast them into toil: a man of little knowledge who wants to teach people much; a forbearing and learned man who has no shrewdness; one who pursues what he cannot obtain and does not deserve; one who labours much and has no rest; one who has rest but no knowledge or insight; a scholar in whose head there is no thought of what is right; one who thinks of what is right but is no scholar; a scholar who loves the world; one who is kind to people yet miserly with what he himself has, and wishes to be generous to people out of others' purses; and a student who disputes with one more learned than himself and, when that one teaches him the matter, will not accept it from him.

Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-'anat" is that which stirs up corruption, sin and ruin and brings hardship upon a man. "Bi-dhi fitna": much knowledge but without shrewdness and understanding of realities is deficient; one who toils and strives in a matter without pause and thought, but acts in haste and hurry, gains nothing but hardship.

Al-Mahasin: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, was asked about a question and answered it. The questioner said: The jurists do not say so! My father said to him: Woe to you! The jurist is surely one who is abstinent in this world, desirous of the Hereafter, and holds fast to the practice of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family.

Al-Mahasin: Abu Basir said: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, say: Among the words of Abu Dharr — may God have mercy on him — was this: O seekers of knowledge, let not your family or your wealth hold you back from seeking knowledge; be among them like a guest about to set out on a journey. One day you will part from them, and then this world will pass into another's hand. This world and the Hereafter are like two lodgings: you move from one to the other, and the span between death and the rising on the Day of Resurrection is no more than a short sleep.
