Beware! There is no good in knowledge that is not passed on to others; and know that there is no good in a recitation without reflection and deliberation, nor in a worship without awareness, understanding and knowledge of the matters of religion.

Munyat al-Murid: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Shall I not tell you who is truly a jurist — knowing in the matters of religion? They said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: He is one who does not make people despair of God's mercy. … And there is no good in a worship in which there is no reflection.

Al-Khisal: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said, quoting his father: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Two classes of my community: if they are sound, my community is sound; and if they are corrupt, my community is corrupt. It was asked: O Messenger of God, who are these two? He said: The jurists and the rulers.

Al-Khisal: Musa b. Ukayl said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: A man is no jurist until he has left off caprice and desire and does not care what garment he wears or with what he fills his belly.

"Ibtidhal al-thawb" is the wearing out of a garment and not keeping it fine. What is meant is that he should not care which garment he wears, whether splendid or poor, new or worn; and "ubtudhila" may be read in the passive, that is, he does not care whether his garments are new or old. "Fawrat al-ju'" is the pang of hunger.

Al-Khisal: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: I fear three things most for my community: the slip of a scholar; the hypocrite's use of the Qur'an to argue for his false claim; and a world that cuts your throats — so be suspicious of the world for your own sake.

Al-Khisal: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said:
