he lords it over his own equals and humbles himself to the rich who are beneath them; he devours their sweets and makes away with his own religion — may God therefore blind his eye and wipe him out from among His scholars. As for the one who possesses understanding and practice, you will see him downcast and sorrowful: he rises in the darkness of night, bowing under his hood, and works; he is wary of everyone but the brothers he trusts — may God make his pillars firm and grant him security on the Day of Resurrection.

Al-Khisal: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: The students of religion are of three kinds; mark them, then, by their signs and characteristics: one group learn knowledge for the sake of display and foolishness; another aim at arrogance and trickery; and one group for understanding and adherence… to the end of the above hadith.

In al-Kafi this hadith is related with slight variation, by a chain raised to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him. "Fa-daqqa llahu min hadha" means that for each of these qualities God calls to account; and it may be that it points to the person, so that "min" is partitive. In al-Kafi it reads "fa-daqqa llahu min hadha khayshumahu wa qata'a minhu hayzumahu", where cutting the hayzum means cutting off his life. "Fa-huwa li-halwa'ihim" means that he may make them taste pleasures; and in some copies "li-hulwanihim", on account of their bribes. "Qata'a al-athar" is an imprecation of being made immobile, as al-Jazari says, or an imprecation of death — and this second possibility is the clearer. By "al-ka'ba" is meant sorrow for the Hereafter. "Burnusihi" means the old hood that worshippers wore in the earliest days of Islam,
