2. following the scholar; 3. keeping company with the learned man in order to seek knowledge; 4. the manner of seeking knowledge from him with perfect courtesy — and this though Moses was among the prophets of firm resolve, and that godly sage was under no obligation to teach him all his knowledge, but said "of what you have been taught", that is, I shall teach you some of my knowledge; 5. the teacher's courtesy towards the student; 6. taking an undertaking from the student first; 7. the student's not disobeying the teacher; 8. not rejecting at first sight what he sees from the teacher; 9. patience with what he does not understand of scholarly matters; 10. not rushing to ask about difficult matters; 11. the teacher's overlooking the student's slips, as appears from the words of God: "Do not take me to task for what I forgot, nor lay upon me a hard command in my affair" — and other things not hidden from a man of understanding.
