who will find no cure for the sickness of ignorance; rather the proof against him is stronger, the regret upon him more lasting, and he is more deserving of blame before God.
Kanz al-Karajaki: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: Knowledge is of two kinds: knowledge in the heart, which is the profitable knowledge; and knowledge upon the tongue, which is a proof against the servants.
And he said: Whoever increases in the right guidance of knowledge and does not increase in abstinence from this world — such knowledge increases him in nothing but distance from God.
The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: If the bearers of knowledge bore it as it deserves, God and His angels and the obedient among His creation would love them. But they take up knowledge for the sake of their world, so God hates them and they are despised among people.
And he said: Learn knowledge, and learn with it dignity and forbearance; and beware of being overbearing scholars, lest it drag you into ignorance.
'Uddat al-Da'i: From the Prophet — may God bless him and his family: Whoever increases in knowledge and does not increase in guidance gains nothing but distance from God.
Hafs b. al-Bakhtari related: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, relate from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that he said: O Kumayl, be generous but do not become renowned. Keep yourself hidden and do not be on people's minds. Learn knowledge and act upon it. Be silent and you will remain safe. Gladden the righteous and anger the corrupt. If God has made you know His religion, what harm is it that you should not know the people and the people should not know you?
Hisham b. Sa'id related: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say concerning "Then they shall be flung headlong into it, they and the deluded": the deluded are those who recognised the truth and then acted against it.
And he said: The most severely punished of people is a scholar who has gained no benefit at all from his knowledge.
And he said: Learn whatever you wish to learn; but God will give you benefit for your action, not for your knowledge — for the scholars' effort is in putting into practice what they know, while the effort of the foolish and the empty-headed is in gathering up and passing on words.
And he — may God bless him and his family — said: Knowledge that is not acted upon is like a treasure from which nothing is spent: its owner wearied himself in gathering it and gained no benefit from it.
