hopes. Following desire bars one from the truth, and long hope makes one forget the Hereafter.
Al-Majlisi says: the hadith in full will come in the chapter on why the Commander of the Faithful did not change certain innovations, in the Book of Trials.
Nawadir al-Rawandi: Imam Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon him, related from his forefathers, from the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — that he said: The jurists are the trustees of the prophets so long as they have not entered into the world. It was said: O Messenger of God, what is their entering into the world? He said: Following the ruler; and when they follow the ruler, then fear for your religion from them.
The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever loves this world, the fear of the Hereafter departs from his heart; and God has given no servant knowledge such that it increases the love of this world in his heart but that he grows that much more distant from God and God increases His wrath upon him.
Kitab al-Durra al-Bahira: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Knowledge is God's trust upon His earth, and the scholars are its trustees. So whoever acts upon his knowledge has discharged his trust; and whoever does not act is recorded in the divine register among the betrayers of trust.
Nahj al-Balagha: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Do not turn your knowledge into ignorance, nor your certainty into doubt. When you know, act; and when you are certain, step forward.
And he, peace be upon him, said: Knowledge has cut off the excuse of those who make excuses.
And he, peace be upon him, said: Knowledge must be joined to action; and whoever has learned must set to work. Knowledge calls out for action: if it answers, well; and if not, it turns away from him.
And he said to Jabir b. 'Abd Allah al-Ansari: Jabir, the world stands upon four: a learned man who puts his knowledge to use; an ignorant man who does not refuse to learn; a generous man who is not miserly in his giving; and a poor man who does not sell his Hereafter for his world. So if the scholar squanders his knowledge, and the ignorant does not set about learning, and the rich man is miserly in his giving — then the poor man sells his Hereafter for this world.
And he, peace be upon him, said in one of his sermons: Follow the guidance of your Prophet, for it is the most excellent guidance; and take his practice as your way, for it is the most rightly guiding of practices. Learn the Qur'an, for it is the best of speech; and understand it well, for it is the springtime of hearts. Seek healing from its light, for it is the healing of ailing breasts; and recite it beautifully, for it is the most profitable of narratives. For a scholar who acts upon other than his knowledge is like a bewildered ignorant man
