and his striving in religion increase; and this is the one who profits from knowledge, and he should teach it. But whoever seeks knowledge for the affairs of this world, for standing among people and for advantage before the ruler — whatever of it reaches him only increases his self-importance and his boasting over people, and increases his delusion before God and his wrong against religion. Such a one does not profit from knowledge; he is left helpless as to any proof on his own behalf, and on the Day of Resurrection it will only increase his abasement and regret.

Al-Jawhari said: "al-nahma" is the setting of one's aspiration upon a thing; its active participle is "manhum", that is, avid and greedy.

Al-Majlisi says: I found in the book of Sulaym b. Qays al-Hilali that Qays related from the Commander of the Faithful, from the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — that he said: Two are avid and never satisfied: the one avid for this world, who is never satisfied with it; and the one avid for knowledge, who is never satisfied with it. Whoever contents himself with what God has made lawful to him of this world remains sound; and whoever gains it by other than the lawful way perishes, unless he repents and makes restitution. Whoever takes knowledge from those worthy of it and acts upon it attains salvation; and whoever has this world in view by it perishes, and his portion shall be this world alone. The scholars are of two kinds: a scholar who acts upon his knowledge — such a one attains salvation; and a scholar who abandons acting upon his knowledge — such a one perishes. The people of Hell shall be tormented by the stench of the scholar who abandons his knowledge. The most remorseful and regretful of the people of Hell is one who calls a servant to God, and that servant accepts and obeys God and enters the Garden, while the caller disobeys God's command and, for abandoning his knowledge and following his desire and his disobedience towards God, enters the Fire. Two things are at work: following desire, and length of
