"Yahtifu bi'l-'amal" means that knowledge seeks action and calls a man to it; and if the man does not act upon what knowledge seeks and requires, it parts from him.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, related from the Prophet of God — may God bless him and his family — that he said: The scholars are of two kinds: first, a learned man who acts upon his knowledge, and he is of those who are saved; second, a man who does not act upon his knowledge, and he is of those who perish. The people of the Fire are tormented by the stench of the scholar who does not act. The most regretful and remorseful of the people of Hell is a man who called another to God, and that man answered his call and accepted from him and obeyed God, so God brought him into the Garden — while the caller, for his failure to act, is taken to Hell.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, related from the Prophet of God — may God bless him and his family — that he said: Two hungry men are never satisfied: first, the seeker of this world; second, the seeker of knowledge. Whoever contents himself with what is lawful of this world remains sound, and whoever eats of its unlawful perishes, unless he repents or makes restitution. And whoever takes knowledge from those worthy of it and acts upon it is saved; and whoever seeks this world by that knowledge has only this world for his portion.

Al-Jawhari said: "al-nahma" is the reaching of one's aspiration in a thing; and "manhum" means avid. Al-Majlisi says: the Imam, peace be upon him, said "aw yuraji'" — it may be that the alternative is the narrator's, or that "aw" is in the sense of "and": that is, the man repents to God and restores the unlawful property to its owner. Or repentance belongs to the case where he is unable to restore the property, and restitution to the case where he is able. Some scholars have read it in the passive — that is, God in His grace and generosity forgives him without repentance. And it has been said that it may be read in the active, that is, the man returns to God by good deeds and by abandoning sin.
