Zurara says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said to me: Keep away from the people of analogy in religion, for they have abandoned the knowledge of what was committed to them and have put themselves to trouble over what was withheld from them. They interpret the hadiths and ascribe lies to God, Mighty and Majestic, as though someone were calling out to them from ahead; they have become bewildered and lost in the earth and in God's religion.

Majalis al-Mufid: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: May God curse the people of analogy, for they have altered the word of God and of God's Messenger and have accused the truthful in God's religion.

Majalis al-Mufid: Mansur b. Abi Yahya says: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, mounted the pulpit, and with the colour gone from his face he turned to the people and said: O Muslims, my mission and the Hour are joined like these two fingers of mine — and he placed his two index fingers side by side. Then he said: O Muslims, truly the best way is the way of Muhammad, and the best speech is the Book of God, and the worst of matters are new and newly invented matters. Know that every innovation is misguidance, and the place of every misguidance is in the Fire. O people, whoever leaves property behind him, it is for his family and his heirs; and whoever leaves behind dependents and those he supported, their care is upon me.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Dawud b. Sartan says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: I relate a hadith to a person and forbid him disputation and obstinacy in God's religion and forbid him analogy; and when he leaves my presence he interprets my hadith in an unsound way. I commanded one group to speak and forbade another group to speak, but each interprets it to his own advantage; these disobey God and the Messenger. If they would listen and obey, I would entrust to them a trust that my father entrusted to his companions; for my father's companions were our adornment in life and in death.
