He picked up a pebble from the ground and said: That he should call this a date stone, and disavow those who oppose him in it, and make his religion the disavowal of whoever says otherwise. Such a person is a hostile opponent who has associated partners with God and has unknowingly become an unbeliever.

The example of the pebble is given to show that whoever introduces an innovation and believes in something false — even in a trifling matter — and makes it his religion and orders his love and enmity according to it, is in the ruling of an unbeliever who will be afflicted with severe punishment and deprived of nearness to the Truth on the Day of Resurrection.

Al-Tawhid: 'Ikrima says: Al-Imam al-Husayn, peace be upon him, said: Whoever founds his religion upon analogy is always in error and strays from the way of truth and is a transgressor in crookedness.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Al-Mu'alla b. Khunays related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: The Imam said concerning the verse "And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from God?" — that is, one who makes his religion by his own personal opinion without the guidance of the Imams, peace be upon them.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Al-Bazanti related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: The Imam said concerning the verse "And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from God?" — that is, one who makes his religion by his own personal opinion without the guidance of an Imam from among the Imams of guidance, peace be upon them.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Ghalib al-Nahwi from Imam al-Sadiq, in the interpretation of this verse "And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from God?", said: That is, one who makes his religion by the desire of his soul without the guidance of an Imam from among the Imams of guidance, peace be upon them.

With damma on the dotted kha', fatha on the nun and sukun on the ya'. Al-Najashi says on p. 296: al-Mu'alla b. Khunays, Abu 'Abdallah, client of Ja'far b. Muhammad, peace be upon them, and before that a client of Banu Asad; of Kufa, a cloth merchant, very weak and not to be relied upon. He has a book which a group relates. And al-'Allama in the second section of al-Khulasa, after quoting al-Najashi's words, says: Ibn al-Ghada'iri said: at the beginning of his affair he was a Mughiri, then he called people to Muhammad b. 'Abdallah known as al-Nafs al-Zakiyya, and on that suspicion Dawud b. 'Ali seized him and killed him; and the exaggerators attach themselves to him. And he said: I do not consider it permissible to rely upon any of his hadith. And concerning him there have been related hadiths that require blame and others that require praise, and we have mentioned them in al-Kitab al-Kabir. And al-Shaykh Abu Ja'far al-Tusi in Kitab al-Ghayba said without a chain: he was among the agents of Abu 'Abdallah, peace be upon him, and was praised in his sight, and he died upon his path; and this requires that he be described as just. Here his words end.
