'Ilal al-Shara'i': My father, may God have mercy on him, from Sa'd b. 'Abdallah, from Hisham b. al-Hakam, from Abu 'Abdallah, peace be upon him, related that he said: In ages past there was a man who sought the world by lawful means and did not attain it. Then he pursued it by unlawful means and still did not reach it. Satan came to him and said: So-and-so, you have sought the world by lawful and unlawful means and have not attained it. Now, do you wish me to guide you to something by which your world may be made prosperous and abundant? The man said: Yes. Satan said: Invent a new religion and call people to it. The man did so, and people accepted his call and obeyed him. Some time passed and the man's world became prosperous and great wealth fell to him. But suddenly he came to himself and said: This religion I have invented and to which I have called people — I see no repentance for it except that I go to those I have led astray and turn them back from the religion to which I called them. So he went to his companions and followers and said: What I called you to and what you accepted is false and of my own making, not the religion of God. They said: You are lying and the truth is just that; you have come to doubt your own religion and have turned back from it. When the man saw this, he prepared a chain and fixed a stake to it and put the chain round his neck and drove the stake into the ground and said: I shall not loose the chain from my neck until the Truth, exalted be He, accepts my repentance. The Truth, exalted be He, revealed to a prophet of the prophets of that age: Tell so-and-so: By My might and greatness, if you call upon Me until the joints of your bones part from one another, I shall not answer you unless you bring back to life all those who have died in your religion and turn them back from your false and invented religion.

Al-Tawhid, 'Uyun Akhbar al-Rida, peace be upon him, and Amali al-Saduq: Al-Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, related from his fathers, from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and said: God the Exalted said: Whoever interprets My words by his own opinion has not believed in Me; and whoever likens Me to My creatures has not truly known Me; and whoever makes use of analogy in My religion is not of My religion.

With fatha on the undotted ra' and a doubled ya'; it is shared between two men: one is Ibn Shabib, trustworthy, the maternal uncle of al-Mu'tasim; and the other is Ibn al-Salt al-Baghdadi al-Ash'ari al-Qummi, trustworthy and truthful. Distinguishing the two is difficult, but since both are just, there is no difficulty in their narration. It is possible that the one in the chain is Ibn al-Salt, on account of Ibrahim b. Hashim's relating from him, as al-Shaykh says in al-Fihrist: al-Rayyan b. al-Salt has a book; al-Shaykh Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad b. Muhammad b. al-Nu'man and al-Husayn b. 'Ubaydallah informed us of it, from Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Husayn, from his father, and Hamza b. Muhammad and Muhammad b. 'Ali, from 'Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Rayyan b. al-Salt.
