He said: Because you were certain of your purity and then you doubted; so it is not for you ever to break your certainty by doubt. I said: Then is it not proper, in this case, that since I doubted whether my garment had become impure, my duty was to look? He said: No, but you wished to remove the doubt from your heart. I said: I knew that my garment had become impure, but its place was not clear to me so that I might wash it. He said: Wash that part of the garment which you think has become impure, so that you may have certainty of your garment's purity.

'Ilal al-Shara'i': Hammad related the like of it.

Tahzib al-Ahkam: 'Abdallah b. Sinan says: I was in the presence of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, when a man asked him: I lend my garment to a protected unbeliever, and I know that he drinks wine and eats the flesh of swine; then he returns my garment to me — should I wash it before praying in it? Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Pray in it and do not wash it on that account, for when you lent him that garment it was pure and you were not certain that it had become impure; so there is no objection to your praying in it, unless you become certain that it is impure.

Tahzib al-Ahkam: Durays al-Kunasi says: I asked Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, about the fat and the cheese that reach us from Byzantium, the land of the idolaters — may we eat of them? He said: Do not eat the amount that you know has been mixed with what is unlawful; but as for the amount you do not know about, eat it, unless you know for certain that it is unlawful.

Tahzib al-Ahkam: 'Abdallah b. Sinan says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Everything in which there is both the unlawful and the lawful is always lawful for you, unless you know specifically the unlawful amount in it, so that you may leave [it].

Da'awat al-Rawandi and al-Kafi: Zurara says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, was following the funeral of a man of Quraysh and I was in attendance upon him; 'Ata' b. Aslam, the jurist of Mecca, was also taking part in the procession with the bier. A woman of the dead man's relatives raised a wail and 'Ata' said to her: Either you fall silent or we turn back! The woman did not fall silent and 'Ata' turned back from accompanying the bier. I said to Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him: 'Ata' has turned back. Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, asked: Why? I explained the story. Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Come along with me. If we were to observe a false practice alongside a true practice and, on account of that false practice, abandon the true practice, we could not fulfil the right of a single Muslim.

Kitab al-Masa'il: 'Ali b. Ja'far says: I asked my brother Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon him, about one who relates an interpretation or a narration from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, concerning a judgement or divorce or manumission, or something of the rites of pilgrimage that I have not heard before, or the like of it, without mentioning the name of any of your enemies — may we say of his word, "God knows best, if
