before him and behind him, and said: — The fortresses of knowledge, the light of affairs and the settling of disputes among people are with us.
Elucidation: The gesture was to make clear that he, may God bless him and his family, spread knowledge in every direction and taught it to everyone; so how should his knowledge not be among people?

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Mu'alla b. 'Uthman related: Someone mentioned a hadith in the presence of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, while I was there. He said: Do they relate from men? — It seemed the Imam grew angry; he placed a cushion under his arm and said: — By God, we ask them while we are more knowing than they. Our asking is so that we may bind them so that they cannot deny. Had you seen my father's power of argument in disputing with an opponent, you would have been astonished.
Elucidation: Al-Fayruzabadi says: The upshot of the matter is this: what was related to the questioner loomed large in the Imam's presence, peace be upon him, so the Imam, peace be upon him, grew angry and said: We have no need to ask; if now and then we ask, it is only to argue and to bind the opponent to what he has no power to deny. Then the Imam, peace be upon him, described his noble father's power in adducing proof and overcoming an opponent: that he would turn upon the opponent with the utmost power and strength in establishing proof; or that he, peace be upon him, would draw the proof out of the opponent's own words and compel him to acknowledge the truth — so that had you seen him you would have been astonished at this.

Al-Sara'ir: Harun b. Kharija says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: We hear from our opponents a hadith that is in our favour and against them. He, peace be upon him, said: Do not go to them and do not listen to their words. May God curse them and their idolatrous creeds.
