was more knowing than he; and God, exalted, because He feared self-admiration for His prophet, informed him that among My creatures there is one more knowing than you. — He said: — Moses prayed to be guided to that learned man, and God brought him to the prophet Khidr; and Khidr bored a hole in the ship and Moses could not bear it; and Khidr killed the boy and Moses could not endure it; and Khidr set up the wall and Moses could not bear it. As for the believers: the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, took my hand on the day of Ghadir and said: O God, whoever's master I am, 'Ali is his master. Did people bear it — save one whom God preserved? Glad tidings to you, and glad tidings to you! God, exalted, singled you out for the cause of the Messenger and for his knowledge, and you accepted it; and He did not single out for it even the angels, the prophets and the messengers.

Kitab Sulaym b. Qays: Imam al-Sajjad, peace be upon him, said: O brother of 'Abd al-Qays, fear God! If something becomes clear to you, accept it; otherwise keep silent, that you may remain safe, and refer its knowledge to God — for you are in a breadth wider than the distance between heaven and earth.

In the hand of Shaykh Muhammad b. 'Ali al-Juba'i, may his secret be sanctified, quoted from the book al-Basa'ir of Sa'd b. 'Abd Allah b. Abi Khalaf al-Qummi, from al-Husayn b. Sa'id, from Safwan, from 'Abd Allah al-Kahili, from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he recited this verse: "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is in dispute among them, and then find within themselves no discomfort at what you have decided, and submit in full submission." Then he said: If a people worshipped the One God and then, concerning something the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, had done, said: Why did the Prophet do thus and thus? — or, contrary to the Prophet's act, said: It would have been better if it were thus and thus — they would become idolaters by that saying. Then he said: If they worshipped God and believed in His oneness, and after that, concerning something the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, had done, said: Why did the Prophet do thus and thus? — and said this out of their own conviction — they would certainly become idolaters by this saying. Then he recited the above verse.

Sufyan b. al-Simt says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! A certain person comes to us from you who is known for lying, and relates to us a hadith which we do not find acceptable. Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Does he tell you that I called night day or day night? He said: No. He said: If
