Rijal al-Kashshi: Abu Basir says: I was with Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, when it was said to him: Salim b. Abi Hafsa — who did not believe in the imamate — relates from you that you speak in seventy ways and can carry off all of them. He said: What does Salim want of us for establishing the imamate? Does he want us to bring the angels to establish our imamate? By God, the prophets did not bring them. Abraham the Friend said: "I am sick" — and by God he was not sick, nor did he lie. And Abraham said: Rather, the greatest idol broke them — though it had not broken them, nor did he lie. And Joseph said: "You are thieves" — by God, they were not thieves, nor did Joseph lie.
Elucidation: Since the cause of this objection was Salim's not accepting his imamate, peace be upon him — for after accepting it one must submit in everything that issues from them, peace be upon them — the Imam, peace be upon him, said: First, what proof does Salim want from us so that he may believe in the imamate? If in this matter the setting forth of proofs and arguments and the showing of miracles suffices, he has already heard from us and seen more than enough. If he wants me to bring the angels so that he may see them and they may bear true witness to our word, that is something the prophets did not bring either. Then the Imam, peace be upon him, returned to correcting his own words, namely that what is meant by the various aspects of speech is the removal of the apparent conflict in speech by way of dissimulation and expediency, and that this is not lying; and the like of it issued from the prophets.

Rijal al-Kashshi: 'Ali b. Suwayd al-Sa'i says: Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, wrote to me when he was in prison: To proceed — you are a man whom God, exalted, has made of the intimates of the family of Muhammad, in that He has inspired right guidance in you and made you discerning in the matters of religion, so that you have given the family of Muhammad excellence over others, refer matters back to them, and are content with their words… And after a long discourse he wrote: Whomever you hope will accept, call him to the way of your Lord concerning us, and love the family of Muhammad, peace be upon them. Whatever word of ours reaches you, or is ascribed to us, do not say: This is false, even if you know otherwise; for you do not know why we said it or in what manner we described it. Believe what I tell you, and do not search out what I keep hidden from you. I tell you that among the most binding of your brother's rights upon you is that you do not conceal from him anything of this world or the next that profits him.
