If they are asked about a matter in God's religion and there is no report about it from the Messenger of God, they refer it back to God, to His Messenger and to those in authority. Those who have learned knowledge from the family of Muhammad know its answer. What keeps them from seeking knowledge with us is enmity and envy towards us. No, by God, Moses did not envy that learned man. Moses, peace be upon him, was a prophet to whom revelation came, and for this reason he met him and sought to speak with him and learned of his knowledge; indeed he acknowledged his knowledge before him and did not envy him — unlike this community after the Messenger of God, who envied our knowledge and our inheritance from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and had no desire for our learning, in the way Moses desired that learned man and asked leave to accompany him so as to learn knowledge from him and be guided by him. When he asked leave to accompany him, that learned man knew that Moses could not accompany him and did not know that he had such knowledge, and that he would not be patient with him. So that learned man said to him: "You will never be able to have patience with me." Moses said to him: Why should I not be patient? The learned man said to him: "And how can you have patience with what you do not encompass in knowledge?" With humility and gentleness Moses asked him to accept him: "You will find me, God willing, patient, and I shall not disobey you in any matter." But the learned man knew that Moses would not be patient. O Ishaq! By God, today the state of the judges, the jurists and their followers is just the same. By God, they have no awareness of our knowledge, do not accept it, do not bear it and do not profit from it; and just as Moses, peace be upon him, was not patient with that learned man's knowledge while accompanying him, neither are these patient. Moses knew what kind of knowledge he had. The learned man's deeds were disagreeable to Moses, yet God was pleased with them and they were the very truth; likewise our knowledge is disliked among the ignorant and they do not profit from it, while with God it is the truth.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: Al-Mufaddal b. 'Umar says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: One report that you understand is better than ten reports that you merely relate. Truly every truth has a reality and every right thing has a light. Then he said: By God, we do not count any of our Shi'a a jurist until something is said to him in hints and he grasps the hint.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Jabir b. Yazid says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: O Jabir, our hadith is hard and difficult, unveiled, unruly, sharp and keen. By God, none can bear it but a prophet sent with a mission, or an angel brought near, or a tested believer. O Jabir, when something of our walaya is related to you and your heart softens to that matter, praise God; and if your heart denies it, refer it back to us, the People of the House, and do not say: How did this hadith come? How was it? How is it? By God, that is associating partners with God the Great.
