Salim b. Abi Hafsa relates from you that you speak in seventy aspects and have a way out of each of them. He said: What does Salim want of me? Does he want me to bring the angels? By God, the prophets did not bring the angels either! Abraham said: "I am sick" — yet he was not sick, nor did he lie. He said: "Rather, the greatest of them did it" — yet it was not so, nor did Abraham lie. And Joseph said: "O caravan, you are thieves" — yet they had not stolen, nor did Joseph lie.

Al-Ikhtisas and Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Ishaq b. 'Ammar relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: The likeness of 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, and of us, the Imams after him, among this community is like Moses and the learned man whom Moses, peace be upon him, met and with whom he spoke, and whose company he asked leave to keep; and thus God has set forth the story of the two of them in His Book for the Prophet, may God bless him and his family — where God said to Moses, peace be upon him: "O Moses, I have chosen you above people by My messages and by My speaking [to you]; so take what I have given you and be among the thankful." Then He said: "And We wrote for him on the Tablets [the Torah] in every matter an admonition and an explanation of everything." Yet that learned man had a knowledge that had not been written for Moses on the Tablets. Moses supposed that all the matters he needed in his prophethood and all the sciences had been written for him on the Tablets — just as the jurists and the scholars who make such claims suppose. They imagine that they possess all the understanding and knowledge that this community needs in religion and that they learned this knowledge from the Messenger of God and have preserved it, whereas they do not know all that the Messenger of God knew, and have no awareness of his knowledge and do not know him. Whenever they are asked about the lawful, the unlawful and the rulings, if nothing has been related about it from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, they are ashamed lest people ascribe ignorance to them, and they dislike being unable to answer a question. Thus it is that people seek knowledge from other than its mine. They bring their own opinion and analogy into God's religion and leave aside the words of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, and wish to carry out God's affair by innovation — whereas the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Every innovation is misguidance.
