so whoever accepts is the most excellent of them, and wherever we are, our Shi'a are with us.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Al-Husayn b. Khalid says: Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, said: How do you recite this verse: "O you who believe, fear God as He should be feared, and do not die except as Muslims" — and what is meant by it? I said: Muslims. He said: Glory be to God! Faith has come upon them and they are called believers; then are they asked about their Islam, while faith is higher than Islam? I said: Thus it comes in the reading of Zayd b. Thabit. He said: But in the reading of 'Ali, peace be upon him, which is the reading that Gabriel brought down upon the Prophet (the Qur'an), it reads: "except while you are submitting (musallimun) to the Messenger of God and then to the Imam after him."

Elucidation: In 'Ali's reading, peace be upon him, it is with the doubled letter. On either reading what is meant is that when death overtakes you, you should be in no state other than the state of Islam or of submission; so the prohibition is directed at the qualifying condition.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Jabir relates from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, concerning the verse "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is in dispute among them, and then find within themselves no discomfort", that he said: That is, he finds no hardship in his heart at what Muhammad and the family of Muhammad judge; and "and submit in full submission" — and that he submit completely.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Ayyub b. Hurr says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, concerning the verse "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is in dispute among them" to "and submit in full submission", swear three times in succession: It cannot be, so long as there is a black spot in their hearts, even though he fast and pray.

Al-Sara'ir: Al-Safwani relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: A report that you understand with true discernment is better than a thousand hadiths that you relate.

The Imam, peace be upon him, said: You must hold to discernment and reflection, not to mere narration.

Talha b. Zayd says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The narrators of the Book are many and those who act upon it are few. How many there are who copy out a hadith while drawing a veil over the Qur'an! Discernment and understanding of hadith grieve the learned, and relating it grieves the ignorant.

Elucidation: In copies of al-Kafi it reads "mustansih lil-hadith", and that is plainer, because of the contrast with his words "tuhzinuhum" — that is, they devote themselves to it and grieve at its loss.

Tafsir al-'Ayyashi: Abu Basir relates from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that it was said to him:
