Allama Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi 2 189

The hadith above admits of two possibilities: 1. What is meant is the kind of denial that is made by opinion and caprice and without presenting it to the verses and the mass-transmitted reports. 2. What is meant by denial is that you act only upon the truth you hold and do not call the report a lie — perhaps that hadith accords with the truth and you have not grasped its meaning; rather, refer its application to one who knows.

'Ali, peace be upon him, said in the hadith of the four hundred: When you hear from our hadith what you do not recognise, refer it back to us, halt concerning it and submit, until the truth becomes clear to you; and do not be among those who divulge in haste.

Elucidation: "Al-madhayi'" is the plural of "midhya'", from "adha'a", meaning to divulge.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Jabir says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, related from the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, that he said: The hadith of the family of Muhammad is hard and hard to bear; none believes in it but an angel brought near, or a prophet sent with a mission, or a servant whose heart God has tested in the way of faith. If you hear a hadith from the family of Muhammad at which your heart softens and which you recognise, accept it; but if you deny it, or your heart refuses to accept it and it is disagreeable to it, refer that hadith back to God, to the Messenger, and to the learned one of the family of Muhammad. Ruin belongs to those who hear a hadith and cannot bear it and say: By God, this is nothing — and by this deny it; and denial is unbelief itself.

Al-Khara'ij wa al-Jara'ih: The like of this hadith is related. Elucidation: "Ishmi'zaz" means contraction, recoiling and aversion.

He is Munakhkhal b. Jamil al-Asadi, a dealer in slave-girls; weak and corrupt in narration. He related from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, and has Kitab al-Tafsir. This is stated by al-Najashi on p. 298.
