or a Qadarite or a Kharijite brings you and ascribes to us — do not call it a lie, for you do not know; perhaps it is a true and sound hadith, and in that case you would have called God, mighty and exalted, a liar above His Throne.

Al-Mahasin: The like of the hadith above has come. Elucidation: That is, the God who has dominion over His Throne, or who is upon the Throne of majesty and glory — not a bodily throne.

Ma'ani al-Akhbar: 'Abd al-Ghaffar al-Jazi says: Someone told me that he asked Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: Is there an unbelief that does not reach the degree of polytheism? He said: Of course, unbelief is polytheism itself. Then he rose and entered the mosque, and cast a glance at me and said: Yes — a man takes a hadith to his friend, who does not appreciate it and returns it; this is a blessing he has denied (kufr), yet it has not reached the degree of polytheism.

Elucidation: The first answer is based on what is immediately understood from the word "kufr", and the second answer on another sense of "kufr"; so there is no conflict between the two. The Imam, peace be upon him, gave the second answer so that the questioner might not suppose that the word "kufr" is in every case synonymous with the word "shirk".

Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi, Amali of al-Saduq and Ma'ani al-Akhbar: In the report of the Syrian old man it comes that Zayd b. Suhan asked 'Ali, peace be upon him: Which deed is greatest with God? He said: Submission and scrupulousness.

Ma'ani al-Akhbar: 'Abd al-Hamid related from Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: Take heed! Is it possible that anyone should accuse me of lying? — while he was leaning upon his seat. Those present said: O Prophet of God, who is there that would call you a liar? He said: One to whom a hadith of mine comes and who says: The Prophet of God never said this. So whatever hadith of mine is related to you, weigh it: if it agrees with the truth, that saying is from me; and whatever hadith is related to you from me that does not accord with the truth, I have not said it — I never say anything but the truth.

Ascribed to the Qadarites, who hold that all their acts are created by themselves and that God, exalted, has in them neither decree nor determination. In the hadith it comes: no Qadarite will enter Paradise. They are those who say: what God wills does not come to pass, and what Iblis wills does come to pass. And "Qadarite" is sometimes explained as "Mu'tazilite". The author of Muntaha al-Maqal relates this from al-Wahid, may his secret be sanctified.
The Kharijites are those who revolted against 'Ali, peace be upon him. Concerning these three sects there are useful discussions in al-Shahrastani's al-Milal wa al-Nihal and al-Baghdadi's al-Farq bayn al-Firaq; let them be consulted.
