by reason of the two verses above from the Qur'an. "An la yaqulu" is an explanation of the "tahsin", not its object. In most copies of al-Kafi it reads "khassa" with a dotted kha' and an undotted sad; in that case the phrase "an la yaqulu" is attached to "khassa" with an implied "bi". And in some copies of al-Kafi it reads "hadda", meaning to encourage and urge, with an implied "'ala".

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Sufyan b. al-Simt says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! A man comes from you and relates mighty reports from you, such that our breasts are straitened and we call him a liar. The Imam, peace be upon him, said: Does he not relate hadith from me? I said: Yes. He said: Does he say that Imam al-Sadiq called night day and day night? I said: He does not say that. He said: Refer it back to us, for calling him a liar is calling us liars.

Elucidation: In the copies we have found it reads "fa-taqulu" in the second person. Perhaps what is meant is: after you have come to know that the hadith is ascribed to us, if you then deny it, it is as though you had denied that night is night and day is day — that is, abandoning the calling of the hadith a lie, and the ugliness of doing so, is evident and there is nothing hidden about it. And it is possible that it is "fa-yaqulu" in the third person — that is, has this man who relates hadith on our behalf denied something self-evident? The narrator says: No. The Imam said: When there is a possibility that it is true, then do not call it a lie, but refer its knowledge back to us. And it is possible that it is "fa-naqulu" in the first person plural — that is, do you suppose that we say something contrary to reason? When such things reach you from us, know that by that hadith we intended something other than what you have understood; or that that hadith reached you from us for some purpose — so do not call it a lie.

Al-Khisal: Abu Harun al-Makfuf says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to me: O Abu Harun, God, blessed and exalted, has sworn by Himself not to admit three groups into His Paradise: one who rejects God's ruling, or rejects the ruling of the rightful leader and Imam, or withholds the right of a believing man… to the end of the hadith.

Elucidation: "Ala" means he swore.

'Ilal al-Shara'i': Abu Basir related from Imam al-Baqir or Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them both, that they said: A hadith which a Murji'ite

The author of Muntaha al-Maqal says: the Murji'ites are those who hold that with faith a sin does no harm, just as with unbelief an act of obedience brings no benefit. They are so named because they hold that God, exalted, has deferred their punishment — that is, postponed it from them. And from Ibn Qutayba: they are those who say that faith is word without deed. And in the reports it comes: the Murji'ite says that whoever does not pray, does not fast, does not perform the major ablution from ritual impurity, demolishes the Ka'ba and marries his own mother is upon the faith of Gabriel and Michael. And it is said: they are those who say that all acts are from God, exalted; and "Murji'ite" is sometimes explained as "Ash'arite".
