He said: And if it is not found in the Book and the Sunna? He said: There is nothing that is not in the Book and the Sunna. The narrator says: He paused a moment and then said: The Imam is granted success and supported so that he may know it from the Book and the Sunna; it is not by independent reasoning and conjecture as you suppose.
Elucidation: His words "yuwaffaqu wa yusaddadu": that is, he is granted success to grasp that matter from the Book and the Sunna. This is the meaning of the hadith, so that it may not conflict with the senses of the preceding reports and with the beginning of this hadith.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Sawra b. Kulayb related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, who said: I came into his presence at Mina and said: May I be your ransom, by what does the Imam give rulings? He said: By the Book of God. I said: And if it is not in the Book of God? He said: By the Sunna. I said: And if it is neither in the Book nor the Sunna? He pointed with his blessed hand that he knew what I meant to say! He said: The Imam knows it from the Book and the Sunna, by God's aid and granting of success. It is not as you suppose!

Basa'ir al-Darajat: 'Abd al-Rahim al-Qasir related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that the Imam said: When a matter arose for 'Ali, peace be upon him, that was not in the Book and the Sunna, he gave judgement by God's inspiration. Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: This is among the difficult matters.
Rather, what is meant is that he has a way of knowledge to it, and it is not as you suppose — that is, by the ordinary ways; rather it is both a casting into the understanding and a casting into the heart at once, without the ordinary way of understanding. And this conflicts neither with the beginning of the report nor with the other reports; so understand. T.
With damma on the undotted sin, sukun on the waw and fatha on the undotted ra'; and "Kulayb" on the pattern of "Zubayr". He is Sawra b. Kulayb b. Mu'awiya al-Asadi, of the companions of Imam al-Baqir and Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them both. Al-Kashshi relates on p. 239 of his Rijal, with his chain from Muhammad b. Mas'ud, from al-Husayn b. Ashkib, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Hammad, from Muhammad b. Isma'il al-Maythami, from Hudhayfa b. Mansur, from Sawra b. Kulayb, who said: Zayd b. 'Ali said to me: O Sawra, how did you know that your master is as you describe him? I said: You have come upon one who knows. He said: Say on. I said: We used to come to your brother Muhammad b. 'Ali, peace be upon them both, and ask him, and he would say: the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said, and God, mighty and exalted, said in His Book — until your brother passed away and we came to you, and you were among those we came to; but you would tell us some things and not all that we asked you about, until we came to your nephew Ja'far, and he told us everything his father had said: the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said, and the Exalted said. He smiled and said: By God, if you say that, then the books of 'Ali, God's blessings be upon him, are with him. From this it is gathered that he was strong in argument, well known for Shi'ism, and worthy that one such as Zayd b. 'Ali should question him.
