Basa'ir al-Darajat: Abu Basir says: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, say: God told His secret to Gabriel, Gabriel to Muhammad, may God bless him and his family, and he to 'Ali, peace be upon him, and 'Ali, peace be upon him, to whomever he willed, one after another.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Mu'ammar b. Khallad related from Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, that he said: The learned one is not able to report all that he knows, for God entrusted His secret to Gabriel, and he entrusted that secret to Muhammad, may God bless him and his family, and he entrusted that secret to whomever God willed.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Sawra b. Kulayb says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: By what does the Imam give rulings? He said: By the Book of God. I said: And if it is not in the Book of God? He said: By the Sunna. I said: And if it is neither in the Book nor the Sunna? He said: There is nothing that is not in the Book and the Sunna. The narrator says: I repeated my question once or twice. He said: The Imam gives rulings by God's inspiration and granting of success and by the Holy Spirit's casting and its aid — but it is not as you suppose.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Khaytham relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: I said: Is there anything not in the Book and the Sunna? He said: No. I said: And what if a question arises that is not in the Book and the Sunna? He said: No. I repeated my question several times. He said: Such a question will not arise.

Then he pointed with his blessed finger that it will be by God's inspiration and the Holy Spirit's casting. And it is not by independent reasoning and opinion, as you suppose.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: The like of this hadith is related.

Basa'ir al-Darajat: Hammad b. 'Uthman related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that Sawra b. Kulayb asked him a question while I was present in that gathering. He said: May I be your ransom! By what does the Imam give rulings? He said: By the Book of God. He said: And if it is not in the Book of God? He said: By the Sunna.

It is also possible that the questioner supposed that the matter of legislating the rulings had been delegated to them; so the Imam, peace be upon him, denied this, saying that his rulings were only according to what has come in the Book and the Sunna, together with a granting of success and support from God, exalted, such that he does not err in it. And perhaps what is meant by the granting of success and support is his being preserved from inadvertence, forgetfulness and error.
He is 'Ali b. Isma'il.
18He is Sawra b. Kulayb, who also related the hadith; it came under number 15 and comes under number 18.
