Munyat al-Murid: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Those who relate the Book are many and those who act upon it are few. How many there are who seek to take admonition from a hadith while drawing a veil over the Qur'an! Understanding a hadith grieves the learned, and relating it grieves the ignorant.

It is related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: When you relate a hadith, ascribe it to the one who related it to you; for if it is true it is to your credit, and if it is false it is upon his neck.

Kitab al-Ijazat: Al-Hasan b. Mahbub relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: I asked him: I hear a hadith and do not know whether it is from you or from your father. He said: Whatever you heard from me, relate from the Prophet.

Sayyid b. Tawus related from the book Madinat al-'Ilm of al-Shaykh al-Saduq, by Ibn al-Mukhtar's chain, who says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: I hear a hadith from you but do not use your exact wording when relating it. He said: If you have understood the hadith well there is no objection, for this is like "ta'al" and "halumma" and "iq'ud" and "ijlis" — which mean "come" and "sit down" (one meaning with only the wording differing).

Kitab Husayn b. 'Uthman: He relates from certain of his companions, from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: When you have grasped the substance and meaning of a hadith, express it however you wish.

'Awali al-La'ali: The Prophet said: Relate a hadith from me only when you know it is from me; otherwise refrain. For whoever lies against me, his place is certainly in the Fire.

Elucidation: "Fa-l-yatabawwa' maq'adahu min al-nar": this expression is much repeated in the hadiths, and its meaning is that he prepares a dwelling for himself in the Fire and takes up residence in it.

'Awali al-La'ali: It is related thus from the Prophet: May God have mercy on a man who hears my words, understands them, and states them just as he heard them; for how many a man

carries understanding yet is not a man of understanding. And in another narration it comes: How many there are who carry understanding to one more understanding than themselves.

Nahj al-Balagha, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: When you hear a report, reflect upon it for the sake of acting, not for the sake of relating; for the narrators of knowledge are many, but those who preserve it and act upon it are few.
