Elucidation: That is, it is fitting that your aim be understanding for the sake of acting, not mere narration. So in this hadith he states two things: first, understanding it and not confining oneself to its wording; second, acting upon it.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Al-Qasim b. 'Awf says: I used to go back and forth between Imam al-Sajjad, peace be upon him, and Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyya; sometimes I would come to him and sometimes to the Imam, peace be upon him. When I met Imam al-Sajjad, peace be upon him, he said to me: Beware of going to the Iraqis and reporting to them that we have taught you knowledge — by God, we have not done so. Beware of seeking leadership through us, for God will ruin you. Do not eat bread through us, for God will increase your poverty. Know that if you are a follower in good it is better than being a chief in evil. Know that whoever relates a hadith from us — we shall one day ask him about it; if he has spoken truly, God records him as truthful, and if he has not, he is recorded among the liars. And do not come here after knowledge any more; for seven years after my death God, exalted, will raise up for you a son from the children of Fatima in whose breast He will cause wisdom to grow, as rain falls and makes crops grow. The narrator says: When he passed away we counted the days, the Fridays, the months and the years, and it was neither more nor less when Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, opened his mouth in speech.

Al-Sara'ir: Al-Sayyari relates from certain of our companions, from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: When

With fatha on the undotted 'ayn and sukun on the waw; he is al-Qasim b. 'Awf al-Shaybani. The Shaykh counted him in his Rijal among the companions of Imam al-Sajjad, peace be upon him, and said: he used to go back and forth between 'Ali b. al-Husayn, peace be upon them both, and Muhammad b. al-Hanafiyya.
Tall": light rain; dew.
With fatha on the undotted sin and a doubled ya'. Al-Najashi gives his entry on p. 58 of his Rijal and says: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sayyar, Abu 'Abd Allah, the secretary, of Basra; in the time of Abu Muhammad, peace be upon him, he was one of the secretaries of the family of Tahir, and he is known as al-Sayyari. He is weak in hadith and corrupt in doctrine — this was told us by al-Husayn b. 'Ubayd Allah — his narration is set aside and his unsupported reports are many. He has books that have reached us, among them: Kitab Thawab al-Qur'an, Kitab al-Tibb, Kitab al-Qira'a, Kitab al-Nawadir, Kitab al-Gharat… And he said: except what is free of extremism and confusion. End of his words. Al-Ghada'iri — according to what is related from him — said: weak and broken down, an extremist and deviant; the shaykhs of Qum excepted his narration from Kitab Nawadir al-Hikma. And it is related from Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Mahbub in Kitab al-Nawadir al-Musannaf that he held the doctrine of transmigration. And al-Kashshi relates on p. 372 of his Rijal, by a chain he mentions, from Ibrahim b. Muhammad b. Hajib, who said: I read in a note from Imam al-Jawad, peace be upon him: let whoever asks about al-Sayyari know that he is not in the position he has claimed for himself, and do not give him anything. The Shaykh in the Fihrist, al-'Allama in the Khulasa, and everyone who has undertaken his biography have followed this, except al-'Allama al-Nuri, who laboured to establish his trustworthiness and exercised his own judgement against the explicit statements of these masters of the discipline. Al-Hilli selected some of his narrations and gave them at the end of al-Sara'ir, saying: he was a companion of al-Rida and Musa, peace be upon them both. I say: his companionship with Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon him, is not free of doubt.
