Elucidation: "Filqat al-jawza", with kasra, means a part of a walnut or its half. Al-Jawhari says: "filqa" also means a piece; one says "a'tini filqat al-jafna", that is, half the bowl. The meaning of the hadith is that the whole world is present before the knowledge of the Imam, peace be upon him: he knows whatever happens in it, like half a walnut in the palm of one of you at which you are looking. His saying "transfer it to parchment" was because of his concern for preserving the hadith, so that it would be more lasting and enduring than paper. And from this hadith is apparent the recommendedness of writing down and preserving hadith, that we write it on something more lasting — especially reports of the virtues and merits of the People of the House, peace be upon them.
Al-Mahasin: Al-Halabi says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: I did not intend to speak with you, but I shall certainly speak with you and counsel you; and how should I not counsel you, when, by God, you are the army of God? By God, no people of any religion worship God but you. Take that hadith of ours and do not squander it, and do not withhold it from those worthy of it; for if I withhold from you, it will be withheld from me [and will not reach others].
Elucidation: Perhaps what the Imam means by this hadith is that before this I did not intend to relate hadith to you, either because you were not capable of it or because of dissimulation; but now, since that obstacle has been removed, I relate hadith to you. It is far-fetched to take the hadith as a rhetorical question of denial. "Wa la tudayyi'uhu": that is, do not relate hadith to one who is not worthy of it. "Fa-law habastu 'ankum la-hubisa 'anni" is an encouragement to relate hadith to those worthy of it, in that withholding hadith from them would cause it to be withheld from you.
Al-Mahasin: Jabir related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Hasten in seeking knowledge. By Him in whose hand my soul is, a single hadith concerning the lawful and the unlawful which you take from a truthful man is better than this world and all that is in it, and than all the gold and silver of the world — according to this verse of the Qur'an: "And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it." If it were 'Ali, peace be upon him, he would command the recitation of the Qur'an.
Elucidation: From his citing the noble verse it becomes clear that the taking in it includes both learning and acting, although it may be that the citation is because acting depends upon knowledge, and that 'Ali, peace be upon him, depends upon knowledge. And "in" in the hadith is the lightened form of the heavy "inna".

Al-Mahasin: Jabir related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him: He said to me: By God, O Jabir, a single hadith from a man
