"Is there not a lodging in Hell for the unbelievers? And he who brought the truth and affirmed it — they are the God-fearing."

"Woe to every sinful liar! He hears the signs of God recited to him, then persists in arrogance as though he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment. And when he learns something of Our signs he takes it in mockery. For such there will be a humiliating punishment."

al-Ahqaf: "[We] created the heavens and the earth and what is between them only in truth and for an appointed term; yet those who disbelieve turn away from what they are warned of."

Hadith 1. Ma'ani al-Akhbar: 'Abd Allah b. Talha says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: No one will ever enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of ostentation, and no one will go to Hell who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of faith. I said: May I be your ransom — sometimes a man puts on a garment or mounts a riding-beast and feels a sense of greatness. Do you say that this is from boastfulness? He said: No, these are not ostentation. Rather "pride" is the denial of the truth, and "faith" is the acknowledgement of the truth.

Hadith 2. Ma'ani al-Akhbar: Muhammad b. Muslim related from Imam al-Baqir or Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon them both, that he said: No one will enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance. The narrator says: I said: What then if we put on a fine garment and a sense of self-importance arises in us? He said: That is a matter between him and God.

Elucidation: That is, arrogance towards God consists in not accepting the truth; while self-admiration between a man and God is that his own deed looms large in his eyes and he counts it a favour done to God.

Ma'ani al-Akhbar: Yazid b. Farqad related from someone who said: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say: No one will enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of self-importance, and no one enters Hell who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of faith. The narrator says: I began to say "Truly we belong to God and to Him we shall return" — this phrase in Arabic corresponds to "woe is me!" as said in Persian. He said: Why did you utter the phrase of return? I said: Because of what I heard from you. He said: It is not as you supposed; what I mean is the denying of the understanding of something, and that is nothing but the denial of the truth (that is, what is meant by pride is denial of God and insolence before the Almighty).

طWhat is apparent is that what is meant is: that this is a sin between him and his Lord; if He wills He takes him to task for it, and if He wills He forgives him. And this is other than the pride he mentioned, which is arrogance towards God and is not forgiven, according to how the preceding and following reports explain it. As for what he, may God have mercy on him, said, if he intended it as an explanation of the whole report, it plainly does not fit the report. T.
