"But when they go out from your presence, they say to those who have been given knowledge: What did he say just now? Those are the ones upon whose hearts God has set a seal." And He said: "For truly you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn away in flight. Nor are you a guide to the blind out of their error. You can make none hear save those who believe in Our signs and are submissive."
Kitab al-Muthanna b. al-Walid: Abu Basir says: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, used to say: None is contentious save one who doubts his religion, or one who is without God-fearing.
Chapter 18: The censure of denying the truth, turning away from it, and reviling its people
The verses
al-Baqara: "And when We took a firm covenant from the Children of Israel: Worship none but God, and do good to parents and kinsfolk, to orphans and the needy; speak kindly to people, establish prayer and give the alms — then, save a few of you, you all turned away in aversion."
al-An'am: "Or lest you say: Had the Book been sent down to us, we would surely have been better guided than they. Now there has come to you a clear proof from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. So who is a greater wrongdoer than one who denies the signs of God and turns away from them? Soon We shall requite those who turn away from Our signs with a severe punishment for [this very] turning away."
"Such is God, your true Lord; and what is there after truth but error? So how are you turned away [from the truth]?"
al-Ra'd: "And thus We have sent it [the Qur'an] down as a clear command; and if, after the knowledge that has come to you, you [still] follow their desires, you will have against God neither friend nor protector."
"And who is a greater wrongdoer than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord and turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have sent before?"
"And whoever turns away from My remembrance shall surely have a straitened [and hard] life, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection. He says: My Lord, why have You raised me up blind when I used to see? He says: Just as Our signs came to you and you consigned them to forgetfulness, so today are you forgotten."
"Until, when [all the unbelievers] come, [God] says: Did you deny My signs while you had no knowledge encompassing them? What then were you doing [all your lives]?"
al-'Ankabut: "And who is a greater wrongdoer than one who invents falsehood against God, or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is there not a lodging in Hell for the unbelievers?"
"And who is a greater wrongdoer than one who is reminded of the signs of his Lord and then turns away from them? Truly We shall take vengeance upon the sinners."
"So who is a greater wrongdoer than one who lies against God and denies the truth when it comes to him?"
