— abandon them, for the loss of one who wrangles is complete. And abandon disputation, for on the Day of Resurrection I shall not intercede for one who wrangles. Abandon disputation, for I am surety for three houses in Paradise for one who abandons wrangling while he is truthful: a house in the midst of Paradise, a house in the upper part of Paradise, and a house in the lower part of Paradise. Abandon disputation, for the first thing God forbade me after the worship of idols was this very wrangling.

The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Whoever meets God with three things enters Paradise by whichever gate he wishes: one who is of good character; one who fears God in open and in secret; and one who abandons disputation even though he be in the right.

The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Beware of wrangling and contention, for the two of them sicken the hearts of religious brothers and sow the seed of hypocrisy.

Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Gabriel, peace be upon him, said to the Prophet, may God bless him and his family: Beware of quarrelling with people.

Kitab 'Asim b. Humayd: Abu 'Ubayda al-Hadhdha' said: I heard Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, saying: Keep away from liars and contenders, for they abandoned what they were commanded to know and burdened themselves with what they were not commanded to know, even counting the knowledge of the heavens as their own concern. O Abu 'Ubayda, deal with people according to their own manners; among ourselves we count no one intelligent unless he knows the undertone of speech: "And you will surely know them by the undertone of their speech; and God knows your deeds."

Kitab Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Shurayh: Jabir al-Ju'fi says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: A group came in to my father and spoke of their contentions with people. My father said to them: Do you have knowledge of the abrogating and the abrogated of the Qur'an? They said: No. He said: What has driven you to enmity? Perhaps you unwittingly make something lawful unlawful or something unlawful lawful. Concerning the Qur'an only one may speak who knows God's lawful and unlawful. That group said: Do you want us to become Murji'ites? My father said: Woe to you! I am no Murji'ite; I am commanding you to the truth.

Jabir says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, used to call his companions, and whoever God willed good for heard and grasped his call; and whoever God willed evil for, He set a seal upon his heart, so that he neither heard nor reflected. And this is the meaning of the noble verse: "Until, when they go out from your presence, they say to those who have been given knowledge: What did he say just now? Those are the ones upon whose hearts God has set a seal."
