he knows the undertone of speech; and that is the word of God, mighty and exalted: "And you will surely know them by the undertone of their speech."

And likewise I found in the book of 'Abd Allah b. Hammad al-Ansari, in the copy that was read before Harun b. Musa al-Tal'ukbari: Jamil b. Darraj says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: The theologians of this group are among the worst of this group.

Then Sayyid b. Tawus says: O my son, perhaps what is meant by the theologians in this hadith are those who, by their speech and their learning, seek what God is not pleased with; or what is meant are those whom occupation with theology keeps from what is more obligatory of the divine duties. And I myself have seen among those who are counted men of theology some in whom this science has left doubts and uncertainties in matters of great importance in Islam. And among the things that bear witness to the soundness of the reports forbidding theology and the uncertainties in it is this: that the scholar of many sciences, Qutb al-Din al-Rawandi Sa'd b. Hibat Allah — may God have mercy on him — composed a treatise which I possess, in which he gathered the disagreements that arose between al-Shaykh al-Mufid and al-Sayyid al-Murtada — though those two great men, especially al-Shaykh al-Mufid, were among the greatest men of their time. In that treatise he mentions about ninety-five of the disputed questions between these two great men in the science of principles, and at the end of it he said: Were I to exhaust all the questions on which they disagreed, it would become a lengthy book. And this itself is evidence of how far theology is from the way of knowing the Lord of lords.

Kanz al-Karajaki: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said: Beware of being contentious in discussion, for it is a cause of doubt in the religion of God.

Munyat al-Murid: The Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: Leave aside wrangling, for its wisdom is not understood and one is not safe from its strife.

The Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: If someone abandons disputation while believing himself in the right, a house is prepared for him in the highest degrees of Paradise; and if someone refrains from disputation while the truth is not on his side, a house is built for him in the midst of Paradise.

And he said: No people have gone astray but that they made disputation firm.

And he said: A servant does not perfect the reality of faith until he abandons wrangling, even though he be in the right.

Abu al-Darda', Abu Umama, Wathila and Anas said: One day we were disputing with one another about a religious question when the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, came in upon us and was angry with an anger such as had never been seen in him. Then he said: Those before you perished for this very reason. Abandon disputation, for the believer does not dispute. Disputation and wrangling
