Rijal al-Kashshi: Hammad says: Abu al-Hasan, peace be upon him, used always to command Muhammad b. Hakim to debate with the people of Medina in the Prophet's mosque, even about the Prophet; and when Ibn Hakim returned from the debate the Imam, peace be upon him, would ask: What did you say to them and what did they say to you? In the end he was pleased with his debating.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Muhammad b. Hakim related the like of it.

Al-Ikhtisas: Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, said: Do not wrangle with the learned, for they will forsake you; and do not wrangle with the foolish, for they will behave ignorantly towards you.

I say: Sayyid b. Tawus says in Kashf al-Mahajja: I relate from the book of Abu Muhammad 'Abd Allah b. Hammad al-Ansari, who is of the companions of our master Imam al-Kazim, peace be upon him; and what I quote here is from an original manuscript whose date of writing is the year three hundred and seventy-six, which was read before the trustworthy shaykh Harun b. Musa al-Tal'ukbari — may God grant him His good pleasure. 'Abd Allah b. Sinan says: One day I intended to come into the blessed presence of Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him. Mu'min al-Taq said: Seek permission for me to enter too. I agreed, and when I was admitted I reported the matter to him. He said: Do not give him leave to come in. I said: May my life be your ransom! His attachment and friendship to you, and his debates concerning this House, and the fact that no one of God's creatures overcomes him in debate and no one can defeat him, are known to you. He said: It is not so; rather a schoolboy could defeat him and overcome him. I said: May I be your ransom, he is loftier and greater than that; and how could it be so when he has debated with the followers of every religion and defeated them all and overcome them? He said: If a schoolboy said to him: Do you debate with people by the command of your Imam, or do you undertake this matter without his command? — since he cannot lie, he would answer: It is without the Imam's command. Then the boy would say: How then have you undertaken this work without your Imam's leave and command, and are a rebel and a sinner before him? And with these words he would overcome him and defeat him. O son of Sinan, do not give him leave to come in to me, for theological speech and disputation corrupt belief and destroy religion.

And likewise in that book, from 'Asim the tailor, from Abu 'Ubayda al-Hadhdha', who said: Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said to me: You must keep away from the people of theological speech and disputation, and from sitting with them; for they have abandoned what they were commanded to know and have taken up what they were not commanded to know, and have burdened themselves with it, to the point that they have burdened themselves with the knowledge of the heavens. O Abu 'Ubayda, mix with people in their manners and keep away from them in their deeds. O Abu 'Ubayda, we do not count a man a jurist and a scholar until
