Majalis of al-Mufid: Abu Ziyad al-Fuqaymi relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, from his forefathers, that the Prophet said: One of the signs of the goodness of a person's Islam is that he does not speak about what does not profit him.

Rijal al-Kashshi: 'Abd al-A'la says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: People find fault with my speaking, yet I speak with people. The Imam, peace be upon him, said: There is no objection to the like of you, who falls and then flies again. Debate well with people. But one who falls at the time of debate — that is, who is defeated in the argument — has no leave to debate.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Al-Tayyar says: I said to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: It has reached me that you do not like debating with people? The Imam, peace be upon him, said: There is no objection to debating by one like you, since you know the rise and fall of an argument.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Hisham b. al-Hakam says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said to me: What is Ibn al-Tayyar doing? I said: He has passed away. He said: May God have mercy on him; may joy and freshness be his portion. He used to defend us, the People of the House, and debate staunchly.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Abu Ja'far al-Ahwal says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: What is Ibn al-Tayyar doing? I said: He has passed away. He said: May God have mercy on him; may joy and freshness be his portion. He used to defend us, the People of the House, and debate staunchly.

Rijal al-Kashshi: Nadr b. al-Sabbah says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, used to say to 'Abd al-Rahman b. al-Hajjaj: Debate with the people of Medina, for I love that men like you be seen among the Shi'a.
