A man said to Imam al-Husayn, peace be upon him: Sit down that we may discuss religion. He said: I know my religion and guidance has been disclosed to me; and if you are ignorant of your religion, go and seek it and search for it. What have I to do with disputing in religion? Satan whispers to a man and says in his ear: Debate with people about religion, lest people suppose that you are incapable of debate and ignorant. Now wrangling does not fall outside four cases: either you dispute with someone while both of you have knowledge — in that case you have abandoned sincere counsel, brought disgrace and wasted that knowledge; or neither of you knew that knowledge — then you have displayed ignorance and been at enmity with each other out of ignorance; or you alone know — then you wrong your companion by exposing his slips; or you do not know and your friend knows it — in that case you have not kept your companion's honour and have lowered his standing. All of these are inadmissible. So whoever deals justly, accepts the truth and abandons wrangling has truly made his faith firm, made his religious conduct good, and guarded his intellect.

Al-Sara'ir: Ibn Sinan says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, say, in censure of the theologians: Had they known how the beginning and root of creation was, two of them would not have differed with each other.

Al-Ghayba of al-Nu'mani: Abu Muhammad al-Ghifari related from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, from the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, that he said: Beware of debating and disputing with those who are deceived in their religion; for until his time comes to an end he remains upon his rotten proof that reaches him from others, and when his time has passed the flame of his sins envelops him and will burn him.

Majalis of al-Mufid: Ja'far b. Muhammad relates from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever helps us against an enemy with his tongue, God will make him eloquent on the Day of Resurrection so that he can state his own case.
