"O you who believe, when you are told to make room in the assemblies, make room; God will make room for you. And when you are told to rise, then rise; God will raise in rank those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge. And God is aware of what you do." For the believing scholar He was content with nothing less than his being raised above the believer who is not learned, just as for the believer He was content with nothing less than his being raised above one who is not a believer. Tell me, then: did God say "God will raise in rank those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge", or did He say: God will raise to high degrees those of you who have nobility of lineage? Did God Himself not say: "Are those who know and those who do not know equal?" How, then, do you deny this raising of mine for this man whom God has raised? Indeed his defeat of that Nasibi by the divine proofs that God taught to him alone is higher than any nobility of lineage. The 'Abbasid said: O son of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, you have ennobled above us one who is not of our standing and station in lineage, whereas preference by nobility of lineage has been the custom from the beginning of Islam until now. The Imam said: Glory be to God! Did al-'Abbas not pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr, when he was of Taym and al-'Abbas of Hashim? Was 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas not appointed by 'Umar b. al-Khattab, though he was a Hashimite and the father of the 'Abbasid caliphs, while 'Umar was of the tribe of 'Adi? And why did 'Umar include men remote from Quraysh in the council of the caliphate while passing over al-'Abbas? If our raising a non-Hashimite above a Hashimite is to be denied and thought strange, then you must deny al-'Abbas's act in pledging allegiance to Abu Bakr and find fault with 'Abd Allah b. 'Abbas for serving 'Umar after pledging allegiance to him. If that was permissible, then so is this. — These words that came from his tongue were as though a stone had been lodged in the Hashimite's throat!

Al-Fayruzabadi said: "al-dast" is an arabicised word meaning the seat of honour in an assembly; one also says "al-dast al-thiyab" and "al-dast al-waraq". "Lamma rafa'ahu llah" may be read with or without doubling.

Amali of al-Saduq: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: On the Day of Resurrection God, mighty and exalted, will gather the people on one ground, and the scales will be set up, and the blood of the martyrs will be weighed against the ink of the scholars — and the ink of the scholars will outweigh the blood of the martyrs.

Amali of al-Saduq: Our shaykh Abu Ja'far al-Saduq recited to us these verses composed by a certain poet:

The wise and learned man exists of himself

by his learning he has no need of his kind. How great is the difference between one you honour for another's sake and one you honour for his own!
