for my sins are great, and the sin of the killing is between me and the slain man, not between me and this his heir. The Imam said: Then prepare yourself to be killed, if that is dearer to you than giving up the reward of this instruction. He said: Yes, O son of the Messenger of God. Then Imam Zayn al-'Abidin, peace be upon him, said to the slain man's heir: O servant of God, if you bear patiently and submit concerning this man's offence against you — in bringing hardship upon you by killing your father, which denied him the pleasures of this world and deprived you of enjoying your father in them — then your father shall be your companion in the Garden. This man instilled faith in you, made the everlasting Garden your due, and delivered you from God's perpetual punishment; so his kindness to you is many times greater than his crime against your father. If, then, you pardon him for his kindness to you, I shall relate to you a hadith of the merit of the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — that is better than the world and all it holds. And if you refuse to pardon him until he pays you the blood-money and you settle, I shall then relate another hadith of lesser merit for you — and against that hadith you will have lost what is better than the world and all it holds, if you take heed. The young man said: O son of the Messenger of God, I have pardoned him without blood-money, purely for the sake of God and because you asked it of me. When the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — was sent in truth to all people as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner… to the end of the hadith, which will come in the chapter on his miracles.

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, and al-Ihtijaj: Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, said: Word reached Imam al-Hadi, peace be upon him, that one of the jurists of his Shi'a had debated with a Nasibi and confuted him with his own proof, so that his disgrace was laid bare. Then one day that Shi'i jurist came in to Imam al-Hadi, peace be upon him, and in that gathering a great cushion was spread, and he sat outside it; and there were gathered with the Imam many of the 'Alids and the Banu Hashim. The Imam, peace be upon him, kept calling him up until he seated him upon that great cushion and turned towards him. This weighed heavily upon the notables present. The 'Alids said nothing, but the elder of the Hashimites turned to the Imam and said: O son of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family — do you thus prefer a common man over the lords of the Banu Hashim, of the children of Abu Talib and of Hashim? The Imam said: Beware lest you be among those of whom God said: "Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book? They are called to the Book of God that it may judge between them; then a party of them turns away in aversion." Will you submit to the judgement of the Qur'an? They said: Yes. He said: Does not God say: "O you who believe, when you are told to make room in the assemblies, make room; God will make room for you. And when you are told to rise, then rise; God will raise in rank those of you who believe and those who have been given knowledge. And God is aware of what you do"?
