and wrangling with a learned man causes him to withhold his knowledge from you; it is only through obeying the learned that one attains felicity.
Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Al-Hasan, son of the daughter of Ilyas, relates from his father, from Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, said: Beware of quarrelling and disputing with people, for it brings evils to light and conceals goodness and good deeds.
Elucidation: Both "'urra" and "ghurra" are read with damma. Al-Jazari says of the one with the undotted 'ayn: "iyyakum wa musharrat al-nas fa-innaha tuzhiru al-'urra". "'Urra" means people's filth and impurity, which is borrowed and used for ugly and evil deeds. "Iyyakum wa musharrat al-nas fa-innaha tadfinu al-ghurra wa tuzhiru al-'urra": "ghurra" means goodness and a good deed, which is likened to the white blaze on a horse's forehead; everything of worth is called "ghurra". Here al-Jazari's words end. In some copies it reads "wa mushar-rat al-nas" — that is, doing evil to people so that they are compelled to return it to you. And in some copies it reads "wa mushajarat al-nas" — that is, enmity with them.

'Ilal al-Shara'i': Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Keep away from disputing with anyone who is beguiled by falsehood and what is not the truth; for Satan prompts him with argument and proof, and this continues until his time is over; and when his term has passed, his being beguiled burns him with the Fire.
Elucidation: That is, Satan prompts him with his own argument and proof.

Al-Sakuni says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, related from his noble forefathers: Truly among the signs of humility is that a man be content to sit in a place lower than where others are seated; and that to everyone whom
