Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Ibn 'Abd Allah relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said to his companions: Hear from me a word that is better for you than black horses made ready for your needs: Let none of you say a word that profits him nothing, and beware of much speech even though it be of profit to you. Say every word in its proper place; how many a speaker speaks out of season and so commits a crime against himself. Do not dispute with the foolish or with the forbearing; for disputing with a forbearing man causes him to cut the bond of affection with you, and disputing with a fool leads to baseness and ruin. Speak of your brothers behind their backs in the way you would like to be spoken of behind your own.
Clarification: "Duhm", with damma, is the plural of "adham" — that is, better for you than black horses halted and made ready for you and for your needs. Or with fatha, "dahm", meaning a large number of people halted before you who obey you in what you command. The first meaning is plainer. "Aqsahu" means he puts him far from himself — that is, it causes the cutting of affection and the removal of strife; or it drives him far from the truth. "Ardahu" means he destroys him, in that it causes folly to issue from him, and so destroys him; or it causes him to be firmly fixed in falsehood.

Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Qatada relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that Waraqa b. Nawfal used thus to counsel Lady Khadija, peace be upon her: Daughter of my brother, do not wrangle with the ignorant or the learned; for wrangling with the ignorant abases you
