وَ لَا خَيْرَ فِي دُنْيَا لَا تَدَبُّرَ فِيهَا وَ لَا خَيْرَ فِي نُسُكٍ لَا وَرَعَ فِيهِ.
and there is no good in worship in which there is no God-fearing.

Al-Mahasin: Zurara says: I asked Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: What is God's right over His creation? He said: That they say what they know and hold themselves back from what they do not know; in that case they have intended God's right.

Al-Mahasin: Ibn al-Hajjaj relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: Beware of two qualities that destroy: first, giving rulings by personal opinion; second, saying what you do not know.

Al-Mahasin: Ibn al-Hajjaj says: I asked Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, about sitting with the people of personal opinion. He said: There is no objection to it, but beware of two qualities that have destroyed men: first, do not hold a belief about God, or worship Him, by your own opinion; second, do not give people rulings without knowledge.
بيان: أن تدين أي تعتقد أو تعبد اللّٰه.
Elucidation: "An tadina": that is, beware of believing, or of worshipping God, by personal opinion.

Al-Mahasin: Abu 'Ubayda relates from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Whoever gives people rulings without knowledge and without God's guidance — the angels of mercy and of punishment curse him, and the burden and sin of those who act upon his ruling rest upon his neck.
Elucidation: "Without knowledge": that is, without knowledge from God that comes without a human intermediary, as was the case with the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, and with some of the sciences of the Imams, peace be upon them. "And guidance": like the rest of the Imams' sciences, peace be upon them, and the sciences of other people. It is possible that what is meant by "guidance" is suppositions that are valid in law; and it is possible that "guidance" is an emphatic repetition of "knowledge".

Al-Mahasin: Ibn Shubruma says: I know a hadith from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, which, whenever I recall it, nearly tears my heart apart; and on the other hand I swear by God that neither he nor his forefathers lied against the Prophet. That hadith is this, that the Prophet said: Whoever acts by analogy has destroyed himself and destroyed others too;
