Hamza b. Humran says: I heard Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, saying: Whoever makes his knowledge a means of his livelihood will be afflicted with destitution. I said: May I be your ransom! Among your Shi'a and friends there is a group who take the sciences they have learned from you to the places where your Shi'a live and spread them among them, and those people, in return for that work, do not withhold kindness and gifts from them, nor do they refrain from honouring them. The Imam, peace be upon him, said: They are not ones who take their livelihood by their knowledge. Rather, he who takes his livelihood by his knowledge is one who, without having any knowledge or being guided by God, gives a ruling by which he tramples upon rights in the hope of gaining a little of this world's goods.

Ma'ani al-Akhbar: Abu Ibrahim says: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: Beware of giving the lie to God. It was said: O Messenger of God, how is that? He said: One of you says: God has said such and such — and God says: You have lied, I did not say it. Or he says: God has not said it — and God, mighty and exalted, says: You have lied, I did say it.

Thawab al-A'mal: Abu Khadija says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Lying against God, against the Messenger, and against the Messenger's successors is among the grave sins.
