'Ilal al-Shara'i': 'Abd al-'Azim al-Hasani related from 'Ali b. Ja'far, from his noble brother Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon them both, that he said: 'Ali b. al-Husayn, peace be upon them both, said: You have no right to sit with whomever you wish, for God, exalted, says in the Qur'an: "And when you see those who plunge into Our signs [in order to discredit them], turn away from them until they enter into some other talk; and if Satan makes you forget [in this matter], then after recollection do not sit with the wrongdoing people." Nor have you the right to say whatever you wish, for the Exalted says in the Qur'an: "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge." And because the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, said: May God have mercy on a servant who speaks a good word and profits, or keeps silent and remains safe. Likewise you have no right to hear whatever you wish, for God, exalted, says: "Truly the hearing, the sight and the heart — all of these will be questioned."
Elucidation: The address in the first verse is a general address that includes everyone; or the one addressed is outwardly the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, while the intent is his community. God says: "And do not pursue" — that is, do not follow; and God's words "all of these" — that is, all these bodily members are treated in this verse as though they were rational beings, since they are questioned about their states and bear witness against their owner.
