and whoever does not know the abrogating from the abrogated and the clear from the ambiguous and yet gives rulings has destroyed himself and destroyed others too.

Al-Mahasin: Abu Raja' related from Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, that he said: Say what you know, and about what you do not know say: God knows best. Truly a man may argue from a verse of the Qur'an and by that very act fall from heaven to earth.

Elucidation: In al-Kafi the wording of the hadith comes as "li-yanzi'u al-aya min al-Qur'an", without the "bi". "Khurur" means falling from a height down below — that is, he becomes as far from God's mercy as the distance between heaven and earth; or he is harmed in his Hereafter more than one harmed by falling from such a height in this world; or he departs from God's intent in the noble verse by more than that distance. Here a likening of the intelligible to the sensible is used.

Al-Mahasin: Muhammad b. Muslim says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When you are asked about something you do not know, say "I do not know", and do not say "God knows best" — for that raises doubt in the questioner's heart; but when he says "I do not know", the questioner does not suspect him.

Al-Mahasin: Muhammad b. Muslim says: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: When you are asked about something you do not know, say "God knows better"; but one who is not a scholar should not say so.

Elucidation: This report does not conflict with the previous hadith, since apparently the earlier report concerns one who is not a scholar; moreover it is possible that it concerned a case in which the questioner would suspect him of evading the answer.

Al-Mahasin: A man relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that he said: When you are asked about something you do not know, say "I do not know"; for saying "I do not know" is better than giving a ruling.

Al-Mahasin: Ibn al-Qaddah relates from Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, that Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Let a scholar who does not know something say "I do not know" and not be ashamed.
