from the hand of a usurper who seeks to lead him astray by the power of his tongue and eloquence — is that better, or rescuing a captive from the hands of the Byzantines? Imam al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: Tell me: a man of the best of the believers is drowning, and a sparrow is drowning too, and I have not the power to save both — which should I set about saving? Which is better? He said: Saving the man who is of the best of the believers is better than saving the sparrow. The Imam said: The merit of rescuing a believing captive from the hand of a usurper by speech and tongue is not to be compared with saving a drowning believer; for by rescuing the believing captive from the usurper's hand he gains his religion, becomes worthy of the Garden and is delivered from Hell — whereas this wronged believer who is drowning is on his way to the Garden of himself, by the very drowning.
God is just even in taking vengeance, and does no wrong. In al-Nihaya it is said: Some constructions are honorific, like "the House of God" and "the she-camel of God"; and for this reason, when a son does something praiseworthy, it is said in his praise "li-llahi abuka" — "God bless your father", meaning how well he brought such a one as you into the world. And in al-Nihaya it is also said: "ma kharamtu min salati rasuli llahi shay'an" means "ma taraktu" — I omitted nothing of the prayer of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family. Of this kind is the hadith "lam akhrim minhu harfan", meaning "lam ada'" — I did not leave out.

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him: It is related from Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him: Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Whoever devotes all his striving and effort to cutting short the harm of our opponents against our weak friends, and to aiding and supporting us in breaking them and exposing their faults and weak points, and to magnifying and honouring the station of God's Messenger and his pure Household — God commands the angels of the Garden to apply themselves to building palaces and dwellings for him, and for every word with which he argues against the enemies of God a company of mighty and powerful angels labours at the building of his palaces, until so many dwellings and palaces are made ready for him that none knows their measure but God, exalted!

The Commentary of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him: Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari, peace be upon him, said: Imam Musa al-Kazim, peace be upon him, said: Whoever helps one who loves us against an enemy of ours, strengthening him and giving him courage until the truth that shows our merit appears in the finest form, and the falsehood by which our enemies seek to repel our truth is shown in its ugliest form — so that the heedless awaken, the learners gain insight, and the insight of the learned increases — God shall raise him up on the Day of Resurrection in the highest stations of the Garden. God says: O My servant who broke My enemies and aided My friends, who declared the merits of Muhammad — may God bless him and his family — the best of My prophets, and the nobility of 'Ali, the most excellent of My friends; who was hostile to whoever was hostile to those two, and who made the names of those two and the names of their successors renowned
